Daily Bulletin Number 6

Final Round Up

When the last session started only the Open Final was of real interest, as the South African women's team had totally destroyed their opponents and were already assured of their trip to Bali. It was hard to predict who would prevail in the Open final.

North led his singleton diamond and declarer won with the ace and played a spade to hand, getting the bad news. When he played a heart North took the ace and exited with a trump.

Declarer won in dummy and played a club for the jack and queen. North's trump exit was won in dummy and declarer played another club. He had uncharacteristically forgotten to cash the king of hearts for a diamond discard and was one down.

South's bid drove East-West into a game that they might not have reached under their own steam. South made the excellent lead of the three of hearts for the queen and king. The contract should always go down now, but North-South lost their way and Egypt were +600.

North's clever 4NT bid took that possibility away from his opponents and made it difficult for them to judge what to do when South correctly decided to save over the cold Six Clubs. Six Spades had to go one down.

The defence started with two rounds of diamonds, so declarer was only one down. A great result for South Africa, but wiped out by the efforts of the Egyptian pair in the other room.

2NT was a game force with spade support. As the match was going East-West might have gambled on Seven Spades, but you can't blame them for stopping in the cold slam.

East-West's sheer weight of high cards meant this was four down, -800. We wonder if East would have passed with the queen of clubs instead of the jack?

It was Egypt who emerged victorious and go forward to represent Zone 8 in Bali.
