The Goldman Touch

24 May 2000

By Maureen Dennison

Two of the Invited pairs in the first revival of the Sunday Times (now the McCallum) Invitation Pairs were Bobby Goldman playing with Paul Soloway and Bobby Wolff with Jim Jacoby. Their match produce a defensive coup from Goldman that had the spectators applauding. This was the board in question.

Jacoby played in 3NT after Soloway had put in a heart overcall. East-West attacked hearts and Jacoby held up until the third round. It seemed one of those hands that would probably make if the A was well placed, and indeed the contract made at all the other tables. Jacoby could see one other chance - if something good happened in the club suit. He entered dummy with a high spade and led a club. The trick went Q,K,A,J! Back to dummy with the other top spade for another club lead. This time it went three, four, eight and nine! Goldman cleared spades and when he regained the lead with A he was able to cash a spade for the setting trick!
