OCTOBER 1999
The Hampshire Scrabble Newsletter
Link of the Fortnight, 21st October to 3rd November 1999
Hampshire may be one county alone, but this online version of the
monthly magazine has much of interest to Scrabble players around
the entire United Kingdom and indeed the world. Annotated games and
articles on tactics, strategy and vocabulary plus ratings and
event calendar sections without compare in the UK. Well-used
clip-art and excellent, empassioned editorial demonstrate
what it is possible for even one enthusiast to produce.
The Grey Labyrinth
Link of the Week, 14th to 20th October 1999
Truly the most gorgeous puzzle site in the world. The design of
the site is faultless and the graphics featured are attractive,
not just merely functional. The puzzles, themselves, too, are
far better than on most puzzle sites; a few old chestnuts in
new clothing, but many that you just don't get elsewhere. The
"Sleeping Beauty" puzzle, a source of much debate, is set to
be thought of as a classic in future years.
Hnefatafl
Link of the Week, 7th to 13th October 1999
Beautiful, but little-known, bilingual (English/Swedish) site
about one man and his games collection. Features pictures of
the boxes and the equipment from most of the major games of the
last ten years, reviews of the games, rules listings,
strategies and other comments. A thoughtfully, carefully and
lovingly produced site with world-leading content.
Pieter Stouten's Shogi Home Page
Link of the Week, 30th September to 6th October 1999
One of the MSO directors has a theory that you can get the
phone number of anyone you want in the world by using a maximum
of two other phone calls; you will know someone who will know
someone who knows your target's phone number. This web site
demonstrates that you can get any information you want about
shogi (Japanese chess) by visiting a maximum of two other web
sites first - and this is where to start. It may be a
cliche, but this is your one-stop shop for all things shogi.
(This site has since been relaunched as shogi.net.)
