JUNE 2000
"Have Cards, Will Travel" Classic Cards Cruise
Link of the Week, 29th June to 5th July 2000
A seven-day party on a boat, which departs from New
Orleans, Louisiana, and takes in Montego Bay, Jamaica,
the Grand Cayman Islands and Cozumel, Mexico, with days
at sea being filled by tournaments in many of your favourite
card games: spades, hearts, cribbage, euchre, pinochle
and Bid Whist. Deposits are required by mid-July.
GammonVillage
Link of the Week, 22nd to 28th June 2000
Extremely popular within our links section, GammonVillage
is proving to live up to its claim of being "backgammon's
newest and most vibrant online community": a fine collection
of interviews, articles and quite deep tutorials and a fine
calendar of events will be of great interest to players of
both online and offline backgammon.
World Puzzle Championships
Link of the Week, 15th to 21st June 2000
The ninth World Puzzle Championships are taking place in
Stamford, CT this year, where national representative teams
struggle against tricky problems to win the Puzzle Star trophy.
An interesting feature is that many countries (including
the United Kingdom,
the USA, Canada,
India and Israel) are picking part of their teams from performances
in the online qualifying test on Saturday - so register at once and
enjoy the contest!
Go (Weiqi, Baduk) Rules
Link of the Week, 8th to 14th June 2000
Go is such an old game that it's not entirely surprising that the
rules have developed in different ways in different countries; this
page details them all and highlights the differences between them.
It also suggests the best ways to teach beginners and to publicise
the game; a very recent addition to the site is a section for
tournament organisers which will be of great use in trying to
standardise how tournaments should wisely be run.
About.com Chess
Link of the Week, 1st to 7th June 2000
The chess section of the about.com empire is a formidable resource
with excellent collections of articles and links. However, the
main reason why we're highlighting it this week is the chat
session organised with FIDE World Champion Alexander Khalifman at
2pm EDT (7pm BST) on Sunday, in association with the champion's own
site, http://www.gmchess.com/,
which is an impressive site itself.
