MAY 2000
FDI's Othello Links
Link of the Week, 25th to 31st May 2000
The problem with link collections is that they often go out of
date quickly; this one is particularly noteworthy because of the
pride taken by its curator. The collections of Othello programs,
online applets and gameplay sites are particularly extensive,
showing the popularity of the game as a computer programming challenge. The
human World Champion loses to the best computer, but sometimes
upsets can happen...
PUZZLES: Can You Believe It?
Link of the Week, 18th to 24th May 2000
Puzzles are popular around the world. Some of us especially enjoy
mechanical, paradoxical, and optical puzzles. Atelier Archimedia
has assembled a collection of pages that include tessellations,
peculiar puzzles, and math curiosities. Of particular interest are
the puzzles that you can create out of checkers, pinballs, or
cardboard. You can assemble them, solve them yourself, and challenge
your friends.
The Renju International Federation
Link of the Week, 11th to 17th May 2000
Renju is popular in Asia and also in the Baltic states
within Europe; it is based upon the traditional
five-in-a-row game of Go-Moku but with a number of changes
to give the two sides equal chances of victory and keeping
it from being solved. The site has all the latest
information on the tournaments, the players, the theory
and the background of the mind sport.
The Online Guide to Traditional Games
Link of the Week, 4th to 10th May 2000
History, useful links and current information about
traditional games from around the world; while MSO readers
will probably be most drawn to the comprehensive histories
of board games (chess games, draughts games, Go, Mancala,
Backgammon and more) there are strong sections on dice, card
and tile games also. More unusual, but still very interesting,
are the sections on lawn and pub games.
Cosmic Encounter Online
Link of the Week, 27th April to 3rd May 2000
Cosmic Encounter may be the most fondly remembered new board
game of the 1970s; a simple set of rules decides results
of battles for alien solar systems, but the intrigue comes
from the fact that each player has the ability to break the
rules in a different way. This site matches up players online
four at a time at no cost so they can bribe, bluff and break
rules against one another in real time.
