Karuta hits the right note
Sounds like Opera; they're agile as acrobats yet playing
cards - Karuta's got everything - "like a tiger doing
yoga". "Grandmasters" Maori Miki and Masayoshi
Kobayashi treated spectators and enthralled competitors,
escaping their own disciplines, to a wonderful artistic
performance. For those wanting more information or a
repeat performance, visit www.Japan2001.org.uk.
More mundane card players swelled the Bridge Pairs events
today, but with the Swiss Pairs and the Swiss Teams of four,
tomorrow, expect double trouble.
On top board, in the Ron Banwell Masters Chess, Graeme
Buckley made no mistake in punishing a slip by Pentalyu
Harikrishna to move into the lead with two rounds
remaining. (See below!)
Young Kim exploited some uncharacteristic play by
Matthew MacFadyen in the British Go Title Match, to
narrow the scores. Young Kim trails 2-1, but has now taken
psychological sente!
In the Creative Thinking World Championship
controversy erupted over one fishy question!
Feminists, for this long {...arms outstretched...} have
argued that women need men like a fish needs a bike...
Why does a fish need a bike? Answers to the
creative caption competition please!
As the 5th MSO draws to a close, original
ideas and possible improvements for next year's MSO
sought... advice welcome (No medals) Talk to Tony today,
or email mso@tcs-chess.demon.co.uk.
And finally some good news... a few DGTs are still
available at the tremendous bargain price of £30 with
sound or £25 silent - and all with batteries included!
See the Congress Office, Room 205.
On the reverse of the newletter were these three pictures:

White: Graeme Buckley
Black: Pentalyu Harikrisha
Black has just played Rab8 and offered a draw. How should white respond?
