Memory Skills World Record Broken

In this MSO Poets Corner, Congratulations to Ben Pridmore for breaking the World Poetry Memory Record! (And to Chan for memorizing a pack of cards in just 57 seconds). Neither were enough for Gold overall, however, which went to number cruncher, Swe Chooi Yip, of Malaysia.

"One day we read, for simple, pure delight, Of Lancelot, whom Love himself constrained. We were alone, not fearing Cupid's might, By unsuspecting innocence sustained..." (Paolo and Francesca - a free translation of Dante's Inferno by Brian Tovey)

Stewart Reuben, well-known high stakes poker pro, will give another talk on the finer aspects of "Texas Hold 'em No limits" tomorrow (Friday) at 3.15pm. Despite the "lucrative conditions" on offer here, Stewart refuses to abandon the excitement of his other chief role - Chess Arbiter.

World Amateur Poker champion, Michael Wellby, came through the pack to win, despite not topping any individual event. "His high scoring performances were extremely consistent", noted Dan Glimne. Poker aficionado (and chief arbiter), Dan Glimne, was pleased to find his poker events were running out of tables. The numbers playing have increased since last year's record entry; All that is needed now is another arbiter for this event to cope with these numbers and Dan will be able to play - Any volunteers?

Grandmasters Falter

WGM Jovanka Houska today defeated pre-tournament favourite, Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua in a thrilling 5-hour encounter. Pawns and pieces were scattered wildly but Jovanka insisted that she was always in control!? Graeme Buckley, too, was on good form overcoming GM Colin McNab. While Pentalya Harikrishna won again to move into clear first place on 5/6.

Het Anderen Spel has arrived! GIPF enthusiasts have been showing off their game, with its beautiful forcing variations being demonstrated to many hapless bystanders. A must for the analytically inclined!

Watch Out for Sky TV later today. (Your chance to be famous for 15 seconds!)

Nominate an Outstanding Arbiter!

Please feel free to nominate an arbiter for a special MSO award, greater recognition of their talents... and extra work next year! - And only a few days remaining for the caption competition!
