This year's Mind Sports Olympiad is taking place at Alexandra Palace, London. The backgammon this year will feature the following elements which this year includes the British Open Backgammon Championships. Entry is open to all players (at the Director's discretion) subject to the appropriate fee being paid. All matches to be played on boards supplied by the MSO. The Olympiad Tournament Director will be Michael Crane of BIBA. Beginner's Tournament: August 19 Qualification: Generally the criteria for being a beginner is someone who has not won a tournament at Biba, NPBS or other. The Director reserves the right to refuse entries if he thinks the entrant does not qualify for the category. Entry Fee: £13 (Reduced fee of £5 for entrants under 16 at the start of the Olympiad, entrants over 60 at the start of the Olympiad and entrants with disabilities.) Format: One day Swiss format of 4, 5 point matches. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers - Gold, Silver and Bronze medal-winners - will go through to join the Weekend Tournament on the Sunday. Subject to numbers, 4th in the Beginners may also be included at the Director's discretion. Tournament Positions: In the event of a draw on rounds won the wins of opponents will be considered to decide final positions. NB: This tournament also includes a Junior Category. Weekend Tournament: August 19, 20 Qualification: Open to all players, including the top players from Beginners Tournament. Entry Fee: £20 (Reduced fee of £8 for entrants under 16 at the start of the Olympiad, entrants over 60 at the start of the Olympiad and entrants with disabilities.) Format: Two day Swiss format of 6, 11 point matches; three matches per day. 1st, 2nd and 3rd to be Gold, Silver and Bronze. Tournament Positions: In the event of a draw on rounds won the wins of opponents will be considered to decide final positions. Olympiad Championship: August 21 - 25 Qualification: Open to all players. Entry Fee: £20 (Reduced fee of £8 for entrants under 16 at the start of the Olympiad, entrants over 60 at the start of the Olympiad and entrants with disabilities.) Format: Four qualifying days (August 21-24) of Swiss format of 3, 5 point matches playing in random groups of 8 players. All players initially start as qualifiying for the Bronze final; three wins on a qualifying day makes you eligible for the Gold final and two wins on a qualifying day makes you eligible for the Silver final. Players who lose two consecutive matches do not have to play the third match. Players can re-enter as many times as numbers and the time table permits in order to better their qualification. Finals: (August 25): One day Swiss format of 4, 7 point matches for all categories.
British Open: August 26, 27 & 28 Qualification: Open to all players. Entry Fee: £25 (Reduced fee of £10 for entrants under 16 at the start of the Olympiad, entrants over 60 at the start of the Olympiad and entrants with disabilities.) Format: Three day knockout format offering four tournaments: Main (11 points), Progressive Consolation (7 points), Last Chance (5 points) and Suicide! (3 points). Timetable:
