Notes
Backgammon for Beginners
You could have paid £25 (juniors £10) and competed
in the Championship as well. To have been eligible for
the Beginners' tournament a player must NOT have won any
tournament organized by the British Isles Backgammon
Association or by the National Backgammon Players Society.
Backgammon Championship
Had opportunities for players to re-enter a second
time (for £15, juniors £6) and a third time (for £5,
juniors £2).
Bridge
Entry fees for Bridge were per player.
Bridge (Mini-Bridge)
In addition to the regular Bridge tournaments we also
organized four sessions of Mini-Bridge (also known as
"Taste Bridge"). These sessions ran from 10am-2pm
each day, Tuesday August 25 - Friday August 28. The first
few minutes of each session were a teach-in, ran by the
English Bridge Union, FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO PREVIOUS
EXPERIENCE WHATSOEVER. You could have learned to play
Mini-Bridge immediately and within a few minutes you
would have been sitting down to play your first few hands!!
All participants in each of these Mini-Bridge sessions
played in a tournament as soon as their teach-in is
finished, it was as easy as that! Entry fees for Mini-Bridge
were per player per session. Each session of Mini-Bridge
began with a short teach-in for absolute beginners which
was followed by a tournament.
Crossword Puzzles
The Times Crossword Puzzle Championship was by
qualification only. The qualifying puzzle was published
in The Times. Two heats were held on August 29
with the finals on August 30.
Hexdame
HexDame is becoming popular in Holland and some other
countries. For details see HexDame's
excellent web site.
Pentamind World Championship
To compete for the Pentamind medals, you had to enter
tournaments for 5 or more different games or mental
skills. AT LEAST ONE OF THESE MUST HAVE BEEN 3 OR MORE
SESSIONS. You scored Pentamind points according to where
you finished in each tournament. The players with the
highest total Pentamind scores won the medals. First
prize included a Round-the-World air ticket donated by
British Airways!! You were able to enter as many
tournaments as you wish for a maximum entry fee of £50 (juniors
£20). If you wished to enter multiple tournaments this
was by far the cheapest way of doing so and it qualified
you for extra medal opportunities.
Poker World Amateur Championship (played without
money)
Was played in five sessions: 5-card draw (Monday); 7-card
stud (Tuesday); 6-card lowball (Wednesday); Omaha (Thursday);
Texas Hold-Em (Friday. Medals were awarded in each
tournament. To have been eligible for the World Amateur
Poker Championship a player must have entered at least 3
tournaments - the title was awarded to the player with
the highest aggregate score over their 3 best tournaments.
The entry fee was £15 per session with a maximum of £45.
War Games
One game was played on each day: Hannibal (24), We the
People (25) and one of the games from GMT's 'Great
Battles of History' series (26). The War Games champion
was the player with the best aggregate score over all
three games.
