1998 Puzzle Tournaments MSO 2 details
This took place at the Second Mind Sports Olympiad in 1998:

Amongst the new events being introduced at the 2nd Mind Sports Olympiad there are 4 puzzle tournaments. There are two types of puzzle tournaments: Brainteasers (challenges on paper) and Mechanical Puzzles (of which the Rubik Cube is the best known example).

The 4 puzzle tournaments are:

a) Designing mechanical puzzles:

Designers must send 20 pieces of each puzzle to reach us by August 10th. They have the choice between retaining them at the end of the Olympiad or offering them for sale. The puzzles are loaned to us at the designer's risk.

In this category we have 3 prizes:
i) The puzzle voted best by the jury;
ii) The puzzle voted best by the competitors in the solving competition;
iii) The puzzle voted best overall.

b) Designing Brainteasers:

Designers must submit brainteasers by August 10th with a complete and legible solution. Incomprehensible ones will be disqualified (or the jury may be unable to tell whether the solution is correct).

In this category we have 3 prizes:
i) The puzzle voted best by the jury;
ii) The puzzle voted best by the competitors in the solving competition;
iii) The puzzle voted best overall.

The jury (Chairperson Anneke Treep) will make its final selection of the medal winners on August 24th.

c) Solving mechanical puzzles (August 25th-26th):

Expert judges will referee any situation where it is hard to judge whether or not it has been solved.

d) Solving Brainteasers (August 27th-28th):

It must be clear how the solver obtained their solutions. This will be indicated on the analysis sheets.
