MSO's Webmaster Extraordinaire
 |
Name:
Chris M. Dickson
Age and Location:
b. 23/10/75, Middlesbrough, England
Education:
BA Hons Mathematical Science, Oxford University
Blood Group:
7-Up positive
Position:
Webmaster. That can mean lots of things, but in my case:
- I deal with your e-mail and make sure it gets to the right place
- I produce the IQ quizzes and puzzles sections
- I organise the creative thinking and trivia contests
- I organise, promote and act as MSO_Admin at most of the chat sessions
- I pick the Link of the Week each week and devise the polls
- I organise the message boards
- I produce the index, updates and site map pages
- I produce most of the Mind Sports Olympiad section of the site
- I do lots of other behind-the-scenes stuff (ie I make a damn fine cup of coffee).
Mindsports background and achievements:
When not seen playing the "rushing around the Mind Sports Olympiad
trying to keep up with everything that's going on" mind sport, here are
my MSO achievements:
- Third last, "Hare and Tortoise" event at MSO I. (Technically there
were only three entrants so I won the Gold medal which makes me reigning
World Champion but third last is more accurate.)
- Bronze medal, Puzzle Design (Brainteasers) event at MSO II.
- 4/6, Entropy event at MSO III. Yes, things are going downhill.
- I keep up with the latest board games in order to get a head start in
the tournaments at MSO XXXIV. I run face-to-face tournaments in "The
Settlers of Catan".
- Keen player and organiser of games by mail. Once managed to keep a
game of Nomic running for about nine months before it inevitably
imploded due to over-complexity (and due a requirement to find Japanese
and Russian translations for the ruleset).
- Lousy game designer. Lousy games or lousy designer? Both.
Most unusual job I ever had:
Do you ever wonder where the wrong answers for multiple-choice questions
come from? Someone's got to make them up. There are 1500 multiple choice
questions floating about in the world where that someone was me.
Comments:
I have one of the UK's largest collections of game show video tapes
with exhibits from five decades and five continents... and counting.
After all, game shows are just made-for-TV mind sports, right?
Enthusiastic but untalented participant at laser games and ten-pin
bowling. Once managed a perfect game at ten-pin bowling, scoring zero -
"actually, that came at the end of a 32-ball missing streak, but I was
only eleven at the time".
