Winner Announced in First Programming Tournament at MSOWorld.com; MSO to Hold a Second Tournament on February 13, 2000.
The winner of MSO Worldwide's first Computer Programming Tournament was
announced today. John "Maze Man" Knoderer of Sulphur Springs, AR has won
$500 with his award-winning program. The tournament being held at the MSO
Worldwide web site (www.msoworld.com)
has been such a success that MSO has decided to hold the contest once a month,
and to allow programmers a longer period of time to enter. The next contest
is scheduled to begin on February 13, 2000 and will continue for 7 days
rather than the original 48 hours first proposed.
"We've been very pleased with the overall response," said MSO CEO, David
Levy, "We'd like to see the tournament grow and have a corresponding event
at the Mind Sports Olympiad. For that reason, we're extending the time
limit to widen the playing field a little."
Through the web site, MSO Worldwide intends to locate its programming
"champions" and continue the competition during the Mind Sports, an annual
competition for board games, classic games, creative thinking, memory
skills, puzzles and now computer programming. Each winner of the monthly
programming challenge receives a cash prize of $500 and a chance to compete
for more prizes during the Fourth Mind Sports Olympiad taking place at
Alexandra Palace in London, August 19th to the 28th. An estimated 15,000
people will attend the 10 day event this year.
Programs submitted are judged based upon a scoring system which gives
quantitative measures to programming time, program efficiency (speed of
execution) and code compactness (elegant programming). The MSO Worldwide
Computer Programming Challenge is also unique because it is designed for
individuals to compete rather than teams. This and the fact that it's
being offered initially through the MSO website only, makes it the only
competition of its kind anywhere.
Those interested in competing are invited to visit the MSO website at
http://www.msoworld.com/programming.html to see the contest rules. The
first contest will take place in the second week of January.
