Play Chess for Kirsty and be Part of Chess History
On Saturday August 9th, in the Sugden Sports Centre in Manchester,
the Scottish Grandmaster Jonathan Rowson will attempt to
break the British record for the number of Chess games played
simultaneously. You can be one of his opponents!
The current record stands at 142 and was set in December 1956.

World Memory Ace to Tutor Manchester Pupils
Eight times World Memory Champion Dominic O'Brien, from
West Sussex, will visit Ducie High School in Moss Side,
Manchester, on July 16th, to tutor a group of
pupils in memory techniques.

The 7th Mind Sports Olympiad will take place from
Saturday August 16th to Monday August 25th inclusive in
the Renold Building at Manchester Conference Centre. The
permanent move has been made possible through generous
sponsorship provided by our hosts, UMIST, and by the
support of the City of Manchester.

Mind Sports Olympiad Moves to a Permanent Home!
We are delighted to announce that the annual Mind Sports
Olympiad is moving to a new permanent home. We expect
the host city and the exact venue to be announced at a
press conference in the near future.

World Memory Record Broken
The world record for memorising a poem was
broken today at the 5th Mind Sports Olympiad,
being held this week until August 28th at
South Bank University. Contestants are required
to memorise as much of a poem as possible,
including punctuation and capitalisation.

Teenage World Champion!
Koichi Nicholas, 17, became the new Lines of
Action World Champion today, defeating a wide
international field. Victory was assured after
his win over defending World Champion,
Grandmaster Fred Kok from the Netherlands.

Double World Champion
Jan Palmgren added the Continuo World Title to
his collection today, when he pipped friend and
fellow Swede, Carl Ragnarsson, to the Gold. Earlier
this week Jan won the Boku World Championship.

New Speed Reading Record Set
Anne Jones improved her own Speed Reading record to
score an astonishing 1347.81. This win makes it
her 5th successive Speed Reading Olympiad title.
Former World Speed Reading Champion, Anne, read
all 46012 words in a under 21 minutes, before
demonstrating her knowledge and comprehension
to the assembled judges.

New Mental Calculations World Record Set
John Rickard, the new Mental Calculations World
Open Champion, astounded fellow competitors with his
record score - 741/750. In 4 gruelling hours John
Rickard answered 126 questions out of 128 correctly,
calculating simple problems such as 674421 * 56434,
prime factors of 80862353 and the 5th root of 20000
to 2 decimal places.

World's first Backgammon Grandmaster defeated
US outsider, Alef Rosenbach, today brushed aside
John Clark, the World's first Backgammon Grandmaster.
The American stormed to 3/3 and is now clear favourite.
Grandmaster Neil McDonald was held to a draw in the
Commonwealth Chess Championships by rising star Thiruchelvam
Murugan, aged 12.

"Mastermind" presenter Magnus Magnusson will be opening the 4th Mind
Sports Olympiad. Magnus will also be the quizmaster on August 20th
for the British Quiz Championship, an open-to-all tournament which
is expected to attract many of the country's leading trivia experts.

On the opening day of the 4th Mind Sports Olympiad,
the 6-year-old genius Liao Xingwen from China, who is already an
expert at the fiendish game of Go, will take on a World Champion Go program
written by Londoner Michael Reiss who lives in Belsize Park.
