South Bank University
5th Mind Sports Olympiad
Saturday August 18th - Monday 27th August 2001

Just 9 days to go, thousands expected.
24 countries already represented.
Mind Sports Olympiad

Draughts and Shogi National Teams are flying in from the United States, Japan, Mongolia and several European countries. British enthusiasts will be out in force to gain maximum exposure from the world's top players.

Natalie Lecordier, strong female Pentamind contender, and fast improving 15 year old talent Benjamin Crowne, will make Anne Jones, reigning Speed Reading World Champion work hard in this year's Speed Reading Olympiad.

Grandmasters are lining up in the Commonwealth Chess Championships, but the attention will no doubt focus on Dibyendu Barua. The Indian is on top form after his confidence-boosting match with Gary Kasparov, and he will prove a formidable challenge to the resident British Grandmaster contingent, led by Scotland's Colin McNab.

Mr Lai will take on all-comers in a 20 board simultaneous display. The former European Chinese Chess Champion is confident to avoid loss, although wary of the rising talent in this country. "Western players are getting younger and stronger", he says, "and Chinese Chess is developing extremely rapidly in this country." Chinese Chess remains the most popular board game in the world.

Take a unique opportunity to preview STAKE OUT, soon coming live to your screens from Challenge TV. How valuable is knowledge? This new format TV Quiz requires you to put your money where your mouth is...

Non gambling word power enthusiasts will be able to follow the BEST from the British Elimination Scrabble Tournament, as the last 16 competitors get whittled down. Whilst those with a creative bent can muse on what archaeologists of the future would make of a fragment of musical notation, if they discovered it after all trace of music-making had been lost. Four rounds of even odder tasks, devised by William Hartston to test even the most creative minds, will face Creative Thinking competitors.

How long does it take to evaluate a position, work out complicated variations, watch out for traps (set some of your own) in short, find the best move? Blitz aficionados rely on their intuition playing both Lightning Chess, Go and Othello.

Other events include Mastermind, Twixt, Backgammon, Diplomacy, Skat, Chinese Chess, Bridge, GIPF, Entropy, Mind-mapping, Zatre, Shogi, Number Quest, Abalone and Othello.

Defending his British Go Title, in a best of 5 match, 6 dan, former European Champion, Matthew Macfadyen, will face a stern test from Korean challenger, Young Kim.

Interviews with top players can be arranged more easily if advance notice is given.
