Koichi Nicholas, (17) became the new Lines of Action World Champion today, defeating a wide international field. Victory was assured after his win over defending World Champion, Grandmaster Fred Kok from the Netherlands.

Michael Handel dropped just half a point to win the Othello 10x10 World Championship. Fellow Englishman Ian Turner took him close and did enough to stay ahead of Japanese challenger Osamu Omadera.

Netherlands were the clear winners in the Olympiad Shogi Team Handicap Match. Mathijs Litjens 100% record enabling his team to stay clear of 2nd placed France.

English pack is beginning to close on the Indian Leaders

In the Ron Banwell Commonwealth Chess Championships, International Masters Danny Gormally and Colin Crouch stepped up a gear, overpowering their opponents with Black in a fine display of attacking chess. They join the chasing pack half point behind the leaders Abhijit Kunte and Pentalya Harikrishna. Norm aspirant Andrew Bigg crushed International Master Andrew Webster.

The Entropy and Twixt World Championships start on Thursday 23rd August. Defending Twixt World Champion Klaus Hausman expects his strongest challenger to be Pentamind expert and Entropy World Champion, Demis Hassabis.

Memorising entire packs of cards, a series of unrelated words and numbers and a poem will be some of the tasks facing competitors in the Olympiad Memory Skills event on Thursday 23rd August 2001.

The Pentamind challenge, for competitors who play in 5 or more events, is warming up. The best five results across all the Olympiad events count towards this title. Demis Hassabis, last year's gold medallist, is trailing multi-talented Czech Jan Stastna and Swede Jan Palmgren. Demis' best two events are still to come.
