Jan Palmgren added the Continuo World Title to his collection today, when he pipped friend and fellow Swede, Carl Ragnarsson, to the Gold. Earlier this week Jan won the Boku World Championship. "My sights are now on a 3rd World Title - the Borderline World Title, to be contested on Monday 27th August."
In the British Go Title Match, defending champion Matthew Macfadyen shrugged off Young Kim's challenge today, to move into a commanding 2-0 lead. If he wins his next match on Saturday 25th August, he will retain his title in this best of 5 match.
In the Ron Banwell Masters Commonwealth Chess Championships, Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte and Pentalya Harikrishna share the lead. The British GMs failed to win, leaving the two Indian players leading on 3½/4. They will face each other tomorrow (Wednesday).
Husband and Wife Gold Medallists
Shogi Champions, Eduard Werner and Rasa
Miseikyte, have each won Individual Olympiad Gold Medals.
Eduard took Gold at the Tori Shogi on Monday while his
wife, Rasa, prevailed at Chu Shogi in a final 3 hour
battle to receive her first MSO Gold. "This was just a blitz
match," commented Rasa, as her favourite Shogi variant, played
on a 25 by 25 board, can easily take more than a day per game!
Winner of the Creativity "Free Entry" Contest was Paul
Holland, comparing Big Brother and a Cardboard Box" - full
answers posted are on the MSO
website at http://www.msoworld.com/ . The winning comparison
was that "One opens to reveal its contents, the other's
contents reveal themselves".
The Olympiad Poker attracted a new MSO record for
the London Lowball on Monday evening. Chief Arbiter
and Poker enthusiast Dan Glimne was delighted with
numbers. A lecture by Stewart Reuben, author and
International Arbiter, added to the attraction. Stewart
will give another lecture, entitled Texas Hold 'em
on Thursday 22nd Aug. 3.15pm.
New games continue to flourish - "Bubble Raft" was
unveiled today as the "simplest game in the world"
with just 2 rules - but complex, and seemingly unfathomable
possibilities.
Mr Lai, former European Chinese Chess Champion, will
tomorrow give a 20 board Simultaneous display,
open to all comers.
The Othello 10 by 10 World Championship takes
place tomorrow. Michael Handel, twice silver
medallist in the Othello 8 by 8, is England's
leading medal hope in the 10 by 10.
