Round 1 - Going Going Gone

Defending British Go Champion, Matthew Macfadyen, was on the ropes today as 5 Dan korean challenger Kim Joung sharpened the battle to win on the board by a single stone, but losing the game due to the Komi of 5.5 points, in Matthew's favour.

The 6 Dan commentator, praised the play on both sides, and at one stage after the lunch break assessed the struggle as winning for Kim, but the result was not settled till the final few stones at the end of a five hour struggle. Game 2 in the best of 5 takes place tomorrow.

Four players shared first in the Continuo World Championship. Jan Palmgren eventually took Gold on tiebreak from Carl Ragnarsson of Sweden while Tony Niccoli and Jan Stastna had to be content with Bronzes (tiebreaks failing to separate them). Top English player, Victoria Westnedge (13), won both the ladies and junior titles.

Indian Summer - puts the Britons in the shade

The strong Indian contingent were putting the heat on their British counterparts on Day 3 of the Ron Banwell Commonwealth Chess Championships. Last year's MSO Champion, GM Danny Gormally, was outclassed by Ponnuswamy Kongruel while IM Colin Crouch was crunched by another Indian GM Abhijit Kunte. This leaves GM Neil McDonald as the sole Englishman sharing the lead on 2.5/3.

Poker player and author, Stewart Reuben, gave a 45 minute talk on London Lowball in advance of an event on this Poker variant. More talks on poker variants and events will take place this week.

Scrabble, Blitz Chess, Poker and Lost Cities are among the evening events being held this week.

Tomorrow's attractions include the Boku World Championship, Mastermind and Mind Mapping.
