New Mental Calculations World Record Set.

John Rickard, the new Mental Calculations World Open Champion, astounded fellow competitors with his record score - 741/750. In 4 gruelling hours John Rickard answered 126 questions out of 128 correctly. This awesome feat involved calculating simple problems such as the following: no calculators and no jottings permitted

  1. Multiply 674421 * 56434
  2. Prime Factors of 80862353.
  3. Calculate to 2 decimal places the 5th root of 20000.
  4. On what day of the week was the 3rd September 1939?
Nigerian National Scrabble Player, Femi Awowade won the first Gold for Nigeria in the Olympiad Scrabble, while 11 Year old Austin Shin finished high up in the top section.

Tezuka Hirohisa from Japan demolished the opposition in the 8 by 8 Othello Blitz World Championship. The more testing 10 by 10 Othello World Championship starts tomorrow.

Thomas Fenner (Germany) won the Abalone World Championship, ahead of Czech Jan Stastna and Frenchman Arthur Lallet. Englishman David Pearce took 5th place.

Matthew Macfadyen strode through the Go 19 by 19 Olympiad Championship as if it was a warm up demonstration match for his British Go Championship Title Match.

10 Year old Jonathan Miller remained poker faced, playing his cards right to claim the junior prize in the Olympiad 5 Card Draw Poker. Father George Miller took the Gold.

Spectators and non-professional players of many disciplines enjoyed the many new games on display today. Don Green, inventor of Octi, demonstrated and taught his game while juniors soon outmanoeuvred adults to win in the "Learn and Play" competitions.

Other competitors showing Beginner's luck included Elizabeth Barker, who after winning the Beginner's tournament yesterday found herself in the playoff for the medals in the Olympiad Backgammon this evening.

The Commonwealth Chess Championships progressed calmly with 21 people sharing the lead on 1.5/2. The tournament remains wide open.

Watch out for the Continuo World Championship, the Speed Reading World Championship and the World Intelligence Championships - all starting tomorrow.
