5th Mind Sports Olympiad Saturday August 18th - Monday 27th August 2001

The 5th Mind Sports Olympiad presents over 100
mind-challenging events including 17 World, 2 European, 1
Commonwealth, 6 British and 23 Olympiad Championships. Plus
tournaments for newcomers, demonstration games and simultaneous
displays.
Past years have been a tremendous success, with over 5000
entries last year, representing 63 countries. 8
year old David Howell sensationally defeated Chess
Grandmaster John Nunn. Andi Bell set a new Memory
World Record; and a 6 year old boy from China, Liao
Xingwen flew in specially for the MSO, and won a gold
medal and cash prizes in 2 adult Go events (and Go is
considered the world's most difficult game.)
This year Bill Hartston, of the Independent, will set even
harder tasks in the Creative Thinking World Championship.
A free entry will go to the most ingenious comparison between
Big Brother and a cardboard box. Entries to
creativity@tcs-chess.demon.co.uk by 20th August 2001.
"Promoting creativity through competition"
International Master, David Levy, Founder and Chief
Organiser of the Mind Sports Olympiad movement, has
been hugely encouraged by the warm world-wide response and
anticipates building further on the achievements of the
4th Mind Sports Olympiad.
Sir Brian Tovey, former head of GCHQ and a lifelong
Mental Calculations enthusiast, will open the 5th
MSO at 11am, Saturday 18th August 2001. Among the
events featuring for the first time this year are Lost
Cities and Trax. Games Inventor, Mark
Stretch, will display the new range of showcase games.
Borderline and Boku proved immensely popular with
contestants from other disciplines last year, and both World
Championships are being staged here this year.
Non-professional cardplayers will be gathering for the Poker
World Amateur Championships, traditionally one of the most
popular events.
Other events include Mastermind, Twixt, Backgammon, Diplomacy,
Skat, Chinese Chess, Bridge, GIPF, Entropy, Mind-mapping,
Zatre, Shogi, Number Quest, Abalone and Othello.
Follow the action at www.msoworld.com.
Television crews and photographers are kindly requested to give
advance notice so as not to disrupt play unnecessarily and
avoid multiple clashes for interviews.
