Magnus Magnusson to open Mind Sports Olympiad
"Mastermind" presenter Magnus Magnusson will be opening the 4th Mind
Sports Olympiad at Alexandra Palace, London, at 10am on Saturday August 19th.
Magnus will also be the quizmaster on August 20th for the British Quiz
Championship, an open-to-all tournament which is expected to
attract many of the country's leading trivia experts.
5,000 entries are expected, smashing last year's record of 4,015. Players of
all abilities will be taking part, from beginners and novices to Grandmasters
and World Champions, coming from more than 60 countries including: Japan,
Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan, Senegal and Antigua. Highlights of the 10-
day event, which runs to August 28th, include:
August 19th, 3:30pm: the 6-year-old Go playing genius Liao Xingwen
from China, will take on a World Champion computer program written by
Londoner Michael Reiss.
August 20th-21st, 10am-7:30pm, Memory Skills World Championship, in
which the reigning World Memory Champion Dominic O'Brien will be
attempting to smash the 30-second barrier and break Andi Bell's record for
memorising a pack of playing cards.
August 26th, 2pm-6pm: The London heat of "The Times" crossword
puzzle championship, sponsored by Wordcross.net. This is the last heat
before the grand final of the competition and Wordcross.net will be at
Alexandra Palace all through the Mind Sports Olympiad encouraging
people to join the historic first online crossword championship. There will
be demonstrations of the website with instant prizes to be won and the chance
for visitors to enter the Wordcross.net speed challenge.
August 19th-24th, 10am-2pm: World Amateur Poker Championship, played
without money.
August 19th, 10am-2pm: Creative Thinking World Championship, with
questions set by Bill Hartston ("Beachcomber" of the Daily Express).
Contestants aim to find as many creative answers as possible to questions
such as: "What are the similarities between Victoria Beckham and an orange?"
The Mind Sports Olympiad incorporates 121 tournaments spread across
40 different Mind Sports and mental skills, including Bridge, Chess, Chinese
Chess, Draughts, Go, Dominoes, Cribbage, Speed Reading, Backgammon,
Intelligence, Scrabble, Poker, Memory Skills and Creative Thinking. Entry is
open to all and spectators are welcome.
