    KEENE ON CHESS

    HISTORIC GAME

Today I publish the moves of the historic game won by David Howell, 8, against John Nunn, the world class international grandmaster. The game was played on the final day of the Mind Sports Olympiad at the Olympia Conference Centre, London, an event that brings together 40 thinking sports including chess, bridge and The Times crossword championship.

The game itself was a remarkable tribute to the maturity of the eight-year-old. After Dr Nunn had overplayed his hand by declining to repeat moves and acquiesce in a draw, Howell seized the initiative, offered a temporary sacrifice of a piece to net a clear pawn advantage and then conducted the technical endgame phase with remorseless efficiency.
