Mind Sports Olympiad 8 Venue
|
 |
|
| |
The eighth Mind Sports Olympiad is taking place
at the Manchester Conference Centre. Specifically, it is taking place
in the Renold Building.
A street map of the
surrounding area is available, courtesy of
streetmap.co.uk; UMIST's own
map of the
surrounding campus area is also available. The playing areas for all
events except Bridge are within the Renold Building, coloured red and numbered 7 on the map.
GETTING THERE BY CAR: The Manchester Conference Centre is extremely
close to the A57(M), also known as the Mancunian Way. We recommend the
Manchester Conference Centre's page of information and map about reaching the venue
by car. It is
also possible to produce a detailed map with directions from your location to the
Manchester Conference Centre at no charge.
GETTING THERE BY TRAIN: Greater Manchester has a rail network of 142
route miles with 98 stations, forming a central hub of the North West rail network.
Travel to Manchester Piccadilly train station and make sure to follow signs for
the Fairfield Street Exit. This is within three minutes' walk of the Manchester
Conference Centre. We recommend the Manchester Conference Centre's page of
information and about reaching the venue
by train.
GETTING THERE BY COACH: National
Express operate coaches from many places in the UK to Manchester; special
offer fares of one-way transport for £1 between Manchester and any of Birmingham,
Leeds, Liverpool and London have limited availability. The main coach station within Manchester
is on Chorlton Street, which is within five minutes' walk of the Manchester
Conference Centre. Walk 200 yards down Chorlton Street; UMIST Main Building is
across the road beyond the traffic lights. We recommend the Manchester Conference Centre's page of
information and about reaching the venue
by coach.
GETTING THERE BY BUS: See the Greater
Manchester Public Transport Executive web site for more details, but the
Manchester Conference Centre is within ten minutes' walk of the central
Piccadilly Bus Station. Leave at Portland Street end (nearest to loading stand
YA), cross over into Aytoun Street, walk down this street and UMIST is across
the road beyond the traffic lights. We recommend the Manchester Conference Centre's page of
information and about reaching the venue
by bus.
GETTING THERE BY TRAM: Take the Metrolink tram to Piccadilly Station
(not Picadilly Gardens). Within Piccadilly Station, make sure to follow
signs for the Fairfield Street Exit. This is within three minutes' walk of the
Manchester Conference Centre. We recommend the Manchester Conference Centre's
page of information and about reaching the venue
by train.
GETTING THERE BY AIR: Whether you're flying from within Europe or
intercontinentally, we advise you fly to Manchester Airport, which is the North
of England's major air hub. It is about 8 miles from the Manchester
Conference Centre. We advise you travel between Manchester Airport and Manchester
Piccadilly railway station by train; there is a 24 hour service every day of the
week, with trains as frequent as one per 15 minutes in peak times. From
Manchester Piccadilly train station, follow the advice above. We recommend the Manchester Conference Centre's
page of information and about reaching the venue
by plane.
CAR PARKING: Car parking is available at the multi-storey car park in
Charles Street, less than two minutes' walk away. We have arranged special
concessionary rates for Mind Sports Olympiad competitors. The cost is £4.50
for 24 hours; parking between 8am and 6pm costs £3.50 during the week and £2
at the weekend. To obtain these special rates, you will require a pass that must
be bought from the MSO Registration desk.
SPECTATORS: Spectators are very welcome. There will be no charge made.
FOOD AND DRINK: The Rock Café, adjacent to the largest playing
hall, will be open until 7:30pm each night to sell meals, snacks, sandwiches,
confectionery and beverages. Other food and drink
facilities are available within nearby UMIST buildings.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESS: Lift facilities are available at UMIST.
We'll do our best to help.
PETS: Please note that pets are not allowed on campus.
The only exception is the use of Guide Dogs for the blind.
SMOKING: The whole building operates a "no smoking" policy. Designated
smoking areas are outside the buildings.
ENQUIRIES: Telephone enquiries during the event should be made to event
manager Tony Corfe on 07973 516718. Emergency calls only, please, between 9pm and 9am.
