Mind Sports Olympiad 7 Venue MSO Events

The seventh Mind Sports Olympiad is taking place at the Manchester Conference Centre. Specifically, it is taking place in the Renold Building.

A street map of the surrounding area is available, courtesy of streetmap.co.uk; UMIST's own map of the surrounding campus area is also available. The playing areas for all events except Bridge are within the Renold Building, numbered 7 on the map.

GETTING THERE BY CAR: The Manchester Conference Centre is extremely close to the A57(M), also known as the Mancunian Way. We recommend the Manchester Conference Centre's page of information and map about reaching the venue by car.

GETTING THERE BY TRAIN: Greater Manchester has a rail network of 142 route miles with 98 stations, forming a central hub of the North West rail network. Travel to Manchester Piccadilly train station and make sure to follow signs for the Fairfield Street Exit. This is within two minutes' walk of the Manchester Conference Centre. We recommend the Manchester Conference Centre's page of information and about reaching the venue by train.

WEEKEND TRAIN TRAVEL WARNING: If you are planning to travel to Manchester by train from London, please note that on Saturday August 16th, Sunday August 17th, Saturday August 23rd and Sunday August 24th you should use the Midland Main Line service from London St Pancras and not the line from London Euston. If you are travelling to Manchester from the Midlands on any of those days we advise you to check with Rail Enquiries (telephone 08457 484950) to find out about any changes to the normal schedule.

GETTING THERE BY COACH:
National Express operate coaches from many places in the UK to Manchester; a special offer fare of one-way transport from London to Manchester, or Manchester to London, for £1 has limited availability. The main coach station within Manchester is on Chorlton Street, which is within five minutes' walk of the Manchester Conference Centre. Walk 200 yards down Chorlton Street; UMIST Main Building is across the road beyond the traffic lights.

GETTING THERE BY BUS: See the Greater Manchester Public Transport Executive web site for more details, but the Manchester Conference Centre is within ten minutes' walk of the central Piccadilly Bus Station. Leave at Portland Street end (nearest to loading stand YA), cross over into Aytoun Street, walk down this street and UMIST is across the road beyond the traffic lights.

GETTING THERE BY TRAM: Take the Metrolink tram to Piccadilly Station (not Picadilly Gardens). Within Piccadilly Station, make sure to follow signs for the Fairfield Street Exit. This is within two minutes' walk of the Manchester Conference Centre. We recommend the Manchester Conference Centre's page of information and about reaching the venue by train.

GETTING THERE BY AIR: Whether you're flying from within Europe or intercontinentally, we advise you fly to Manchester Airport, which is the North of England's major air hub. It is about 10 kilometres from the Manchester Conference Centre. We advise you travel between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly railway station by train; there is a 24 hour service every day of the week, with trains as frequent as one per 15 minutes in peak times. From Manchester Piccadilly train station, follow the advice above.

CAR PARKING: Car parking is available at the multi-storey car park in Charles Street, less than two minutes' walk away. There is a charge of £8.00 per 24 hours or part thereof, but there is a reduction available for those staying in the hotel or student accommodation.

SPECTATORS: Spectators are very welcome. There will be no charge made.

FOOD AND DRINK: Self-service lunches will be available at very low prices. Snacks, sandwiches, confectionery and beverages can be bought on a cash basis adjacent to the largest playing hall. Other food and drink facilities are available within nearby UMIST buildings; we recommend the Rock Cafe within the Renold Building, which will serve hot bacon rolls and other tasty snacks from 8:30am until late, and the Barnes Wallis Restaurant.

The Barnes Wallis Restaurant will serve a Full English Breakfast from 8:00am for £3.50 and delicious hot lunches such as lasagne, chilli and curry at prices starting from £3.50. (A take-away service will also be available from 11:00am onwards, serving beefburgers, sandwiches, pizza bites, chips, tea and coffee.) In the evening, hot dinners such as grilled gammon steaks or hotpots will also be available from £3.50. Alternatively, you can pick'n'mix the salad of your choice from the salad bar available at both lunchtime and dinnertime.

SOCIAL EVENTS: These will include at least one party and one barbecue. The barbecue will be held between noon and 7:30pm at the weekends on the Pariser Lawn. A bar area will be available for socialising and playing games in the evenings.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS: Lift facilities are available at UMIST. We'll do our best to help.

SMOKING: The whole building operates a "no smoking" policy. Designated smoking areas are outside the buildings.

ENQUIRIES: Telephone enquiries during the event should be made to event manager Tony Corfe on 07973 516718. Emergency calls only, please, between 9pm and 9am.
